LIQUITY USD (LUSD) FAQ
What is Liquity USD (LUSD)?
LUSD is a decentralized, USD-pegged stablecoin used to pay out interest-free loans on the Liquity protocol. It is backed exclusively by Ethereum (ETH).
Is Liquity truly decentralized?
Yes. Liquity is widely considered one of the most decentralized protocols because it is governance-free (no DAO votes can change the rules) and has no admin keys. The smart contracts are immutable, meaning the original developers cannot change or pause the system.
How does LUSD maintain its $1 peg?
The peg is maintained through two "Hard Peg" mechanisms: Redemptions (Price Floor): If LUSD drops below $1, arbitrageurs can "redeem" 1 LUSD for exactly $1 worth of ETH from the protocol. This creates a price floor. Collateral Ratio (Price Ceiling): The 110% minimum collateral ratio creates a price ceiling. If LUSD trades significantly above $1, it becomes profitable to mint LUSD and sell it.
Is it really 0% interest?
Yes. Liquity does not charge a variable interest rate like some other stablecoin protocols or lending platforms. Instead, it charges a one-time borrowing fee (typically 0.5% to 5%) when you open the loan. There are no ongoing costs regardless of how long the loan stays open.
What is the Stability Pool?
The Stability Pool is the "first line of defense" for the protocol. Users deposit LUSD into it to fund liquidations. When a Trove falls below 110% CR, it is liquidated, and Stability Pool depositors' LUSD is burned to pay the debt. In exchange, depositors receive the liquidated ETH at a discount.
Is LUSD safer than USDT or USDC?
From a decentralization perspective, yes. LUSD cannot be "frozen" or blacklisted by any central company (unlike USDT/USDC). However, its value is tied to the price of ETH and the protocol's own math, whereas USDC is tied to US bank reserves.
